Thread + Matter: IP networking for smart homes

Smart home devices historically were locked to proprietary protocols — a Philips Hue hub for Zigbee, a SmartThings hub for Z-Wave, separate apps for each ecosystem. Thread and Matter are the industry's answer to fragmentation.

Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh networking protocol using the 802.15.4 radio. Matter (developed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung) is the application layer running over Thread, WiFi, and Ethernet — a unified device API that works across all ecosystems. A Matter light switch works with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa simultaneously.
