Traps vs polling: push vs pull

SNMP has two modes: polling (NMS asks devices for data every 5 minutes) and traps (devices send alerts immediately when events occur).

Polling detects issues within one polling interval — up to 5 minutes late. Traps fire instantly: a link goes down at 3:02:14 and the NMS receives an alert at 3:02:14. Both are typically used together.
