SIP: signaling vs media
SIP is a signaling protocol — it sets up, modifies, and tears down calls. It does not carry voice. Audio travels separately over RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) using ports negotiated during SIP setup.
This separation means the SIP proxy only handles call control — once the call is established, RTP flows directly between endpoints, often bypassing the proxy.
