Service mesh: infrastructure-level mTLS

In a microservices environment with 50+ services, implementing mTLS in every service would require each team to manage certificates, rotate them, and handle mTLS in their application code. Service meshes solve this by putting a proxy sidecar next to every service pod — the proxy handles all TLS, authentication, and policy enforcement transparently.

The application code makes plain HTTP/gRPC calls; the proxy upgrades them to mTLS automatically.
