SD-WAN: Software-Defined WAN

WAN transformation: from MPLS-only to multi-link

Traditional enterprise WAN: expensive MPLS circuits to every branch, all traffic backhauled through HQ. Configuration required manual per-device CLI.

SD-WAN separates the control plane (centralized controller making policy decisions) from the data plane (edge devices forwarding packets). The controller knows the whole network; edges follow its policies and use whatever links are available — MPLS, broadband, LTE.
