SSH as a general-purpose tunnel

SSH is widely known for remote shell access, but it's also a flexible tunneling protocol. SSH port forwarding creates encrypted TCP tunnels that can carry any protocol — accessing a database behind a firewall, exposing a local server to the internet, or routing all browser traffic through a remote server.

Three modes: local (remote → local), remote (local → public), dynamic (SOCKS proxy).
