File storage over the network

NFS (Network File System) presents a remote directory as if it were local. Unlike iSCSI (which exports block devices), NFS exports file systems — the server handles all filesystem operations; the client just makes RPC calls.

Developed by Sun in 1984, NFS v3 uses RPC over UDP or TCP. NFSv4 modernized the protocol: single TCP port, stateful sessions, and strong authentication.
