IDS vs IPS: detect vs block

An IDS (Intrusion Detection System) copies traffic and analyzes it — it can alert but not block. An IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) sits inline, analyzing traffic and dropping packets in real-time.

Modern tools like Suricata and Snort support both modes. In IDS mode: tap or SPAN port, alert only. In IPS mode: inline between network segments, can drop, reject, or replace packets.
