IoT protocols: constrained devices need different tradeoffs

IoT devices range from powerful gateways (Raspberry Pi) to microcontrollers with 256KB RAM and months of battery life. Standard protocols like HTTP are too heavy. IoT protocols optimize for: small code footprint, low power, unreliable networks, and push from cloud to device.

MQTT, CoAP, and AMQP each make different tradeoffs along these dimensions.
