Kubernetes networking: the three requirements

Kubernetes mandates three networking properties: (1) every pod gets its own IP, (2) pods can communicate with each other without NAT, (3) node-to-pod communication works without NAT.

Implementing these is left to CNI plugins (Flannel, Calico, Cilium). On top, kube-proxy implements Service VIPs, and CoreDNS provides service discovery. Together they form the cluster network.
