iSCSI: Storage Over IP

Block storage over Ethernet

Traditional SAN uses Fibre Channel — expensive dedicated hardware, HBAs, and FC switches. iSCSI achieves the same result (block-level storage access) over standard TCP/IP networks.

The application server (initiator) connects to a storage appliance (target) and the remote disk appears as a local block device — the OS has no idea it's going over the network.
