Communities: sticky notes on BGP routes
BGP communities are optional attributes attached to route advertisements. They're essentially 32-bit tags that signal routing policy intentions between autonomous systems.
Communities allow a customer to tell their ISP how to handle their routes: 'prefer ISP A for inbound', 'don't export to certain peers', 'blackhole this during an attack'. Each ISP documents which communities they honor.
